Trail Ratings, Protection Levels & Safety Certifications

Trail ratings indicate technical difficulty, which in turn influences the level of protective gear recommended. While not an exact one-to-one correlation, more advanced trails typically demand greater protection.

  • Green (Easy): Beginner-friendly terrain with minimal obstacles.
  • Blue (Moderate): Includes berms, small jumps, and some rock gardens.
  • Red (Difficult): Features steeper descents, larger jumps, and more technical obstacles.
  • Black & Double Black Diamond (Severe/Extreme): Designed for advanced riders, with steep drops, large jumps, and high-speed sections.

MTB PROTECTIVE GEAR CERTIFICATIONS
Protective gear certifications focus on impact absorption, with CE Level 1 and Level 2 being the most common standards. Level 2 provides higher impact protection than Level 1.

  • EN 1621 Standard: Originally developed for motorcycle protection, this standard is also used as a benchmark in mountain biking.
  • ...EN 1621-1: Limb protection (knees, elbows, shoulders)
  • ...EN 1621-2: Back protection
  • ...EN 1621-3: Chest protection

  • CE Level 1: Provides a lower threshold of impact protection, generally suitable for trail and everyday riding.
  • CE Level 2: Offers higher impact protection, commonly used in more aggressive disciplines such as downhill and enduro.
